  Central Ontario is home to 20 of our hydroelectric facilities, some of which, like our Sills Island Generating Station, have been part of their community for more than one hundred years.

Improving dam safety at Little Long

Controlling water levels

Ontario Power Generation (OPG) has made dam safety improvements to water control structures at the Adam Creek spillway, and other nearby dams on the Mattagami River.

The Little Long Dam Safety Project has increased the discharge capacity at the Adam Creek spillway structure, located on the Little Long Reservoir in Northern Ontario. Four new sluice gates were added, as well as other reliability improvements made.

A sluice gate works like a sliding barrier that dam operators use to control water levels and flow rates in rivers.

Improving safety and generating local economic benefit

The project, now complete, ensures that extreme floodwater can safely bypass OPG’s four Lower Mattagami River stations (Little Long, Smoky Falls, Harmon, and Kipling generating stations) in the event of large-scale flooding in the area. This also ensures that OPG is in compliance with updated requirements established by the Province of Ontario.

The project is now complete, include site rehabilitation. The collaboration between the OPG team, project contractors, Indigenous communities, local residents and regulators was crucial in delivering this project on time and on budget. This important project allows us to continue managing water safely at our generating stations and control structures, in accordance with the Mattagami River Water Management Plan.

Much of the project involved heavy civil construction. This provided employment and contracting opportunities for Indigenous communities and local businesses in Kapuskasing, Smooth Rock Falls, and surrounding areas.
