We generate more than half of Ontario’s power
Innovation. Electrification. Sustainability. Climate leadership. There has never been a more exciting time to be in the electricity business, and Ontario Power Generation (OPG) stands at the forefront.
We are not just Ontario’s top producer of clean electricity. OPG, and our subsidiaries, are leading the clean energy transition, from batteries and storage, to hydro, small modular reactors, hydrogen, and more.
Electricity 101
Ontario’s electricity system is made of three components.

The difference between generating, transmitting, and distributing your electricity
OPG is the largest generator of clean electricity in Ontario, but we don’t actually move our power around the province or deliver it to you, the customer. That job falls to Hydro One, which is responsible for transmitting our power, and local energy utilities, such as Hydro Ottawa or Synergy North, who distribute that power to your home.
OPG’s sole focus is to generate clean power, which we then sell, at regulated rates, to local utilities through Ontario’s wholesale electricity market.
We also play an important role in moderating the price of electricity in Ontario, as our electricity is priced about a third less than other generators in the province.
Supporting the clean energy transition
In addition to generating power, OPG, and our subsidiaries, are also providing a range of energy solutions for customers, including fleet electrification, electric vehicle charging infrastructure, and energy storage. We even support healthcare through our subsidiary, Laurentis Energy Partners, which provides critical medical isotopes that enable the life-saving diagnosis and treatment of millions of people around the world. And our subsidiary, Atura Power, is working to create a clean hydrogen supply chain to fuel Ontario's low-carbon growth by decarbonizing heavy industry and long-haul transportation.
While we are branching out to capture more value along the entire energy supply chain, we will always remain focused on our core business - electricity generation. And through all of our activities, we will continue to return significant net income to the people of Ontario, our only shareholder.
