PowerNews Summer 2020

When 10,000 workers first broke ground on the Queenston-Chippewa Hydro-Electric Generating Station in 1917, they faced many obstacles. They didn’t know that within a year the province would be hit by one of the most virulent pandemics the world had ever known in the Spanish flu. But they forged ahead anyway.

More than a century later, that station — now known as Sir Adam Beck I in Niagara Falls — still powers our great province and supports our way of life.

Today, OPG’s dedicated employees from across the province are working to help Ontario out of difficult times and into a brighter future. The company’s clean power projects and efficient operations will have an impact as important and lasting as that seminal project 100 years ago.

This issue of PowerNews showcases a few of the more than 200 projects and initiatives now underway at OPG. This includes the Darlington Refurbishment project, which recently saw Unit 2 returned to service, as well as the Calabogie hydro project in eastern Ontario and our ongoing work to develop a small modular reactor in Canada. This issue also looks at the work taking place at the aforementioned Sir Adam Beck I station to replace two historic units. All of these projects are critical to the economy and to addressing climate change.

In addition, OPG continues to support efforts to contain the spread of COVID-19, because we know the battle isn’t over yet. Our employees are volunteering their time, resources, and ideas to develop safety solutions, donate funds, and sew masks to help protect frontline workers and employees at our worksites.

Throughout the pandemic, OPG’s dedicated employees have risen to the challenge to keep the lights on for Ontario’s homes, health-care facilities, and businesses. As we forge ahead, OPG will continue to fulfill its role as an essential service to help lead Ontario toward a brighter tomorrow.
