Earlier this month, work crews at OPG’s Otto Holden Generating Station (GS) successfully completed a critical milestone on the station’s Unit 6 refurbishment.

The unit’s new rotor was lifted and successfully installed on Feb. 5, with safety at the forefront and a flawless fit — a testament to the skill, precision, and teamwork on site. The rotor is a crucial component that converts mechanical energy from the turbine into electrical energy.

For more than 70 years, Otto Holden GS has been providing reliable hydroelectric power to the province on the Ottawa River – and that legacy continues today.

All eight units at Otto Holden will be refurbished over 12 years. This major investment will help maintain 243 megawatts of reliable power, helping to power the equivalent of more than 240,000 homes in the province for decades to come.

The project is part of OPG’s wider hydro refurbishment program in eastern Ontario, which will see eight stations renewed in the Ottawa Valley — a $1-billion investment over the next 20 years that will secure 1,617 megawatts (MW) of clean, reliable generating capacity, while creating more than 500 highly skilled jobs in the area.

Otto Holden’s 33 MW G6 unit has been in a refurbishment outage for the last nine months and is currently undergoing re-assembly. The unit is scheduled to return to service this spring.

Our hats off to the team executing this work safely and with quality for Ontario.
