Hundreds of students recently got up close and personal with various skilled trades and technical careers thanks to the expertise of OPG employees from across the company.
In June, OPG workers organized another successful “Trades Promoting Trades” event at Saint Francis Xavier High School in Ottawa.
Employees from OPG’s Renewable Generation and Nuclear operations came together to put on a two-day skilled trades career fair, exhibiting their talents and expertise to about 450 Grade 8 and high school students from the community.
Whether it was engineering, machining, welding, or radiation protection, there were many careers on display for students. OPG’s professionals were on hand to guide students through a variety of tactile demonstrations, while offering advice on navigating the trades pathway.

“The ‘Trades Promoting Trades’ team once again hosted an unforgettable event for students, showcasing their expertise with impressive demonstrations and hands-on activities,” said Jill Konarowski, a Mechanical Technician with OPG and one of the leaders of the event. “Their dedication and passion for their craft were evident in every detail of the event, leaving a lasting impression on the students who attended. The team's commitment to fostering interest and appreciation for skilled trades among the next generation is truly commendable.”
The experience was also appreciated by both students and staff from the local high school.

“We extend our heartfelt thanks to OPG for their hard work and dedication,” said Neda Bernabo, principal of Saint Francis Xavier High School. “The feedback from students and staff was overwhelmingly positive. Students were not only engaged but genuinely inspired by the event. OPG’s efforts have left a lasting impression, and we eagerly anticipate future collaborations.”
Meanwhile, in April, workers at OPG’s Chenaux hydroelectric station in eastern Ontario organized a “Women in Trades” event, which was attended by students from Opeongo High School, part of the Renfrew County District School Board.

Organized by OPG’s Erik Dickerson, Mechanical Trades Management Supervisor, and Kate Polk, Training Specialist, and facilitated by Christopher Hamel, Work Centre Manager, the event saw female students listening in on presentations from experienced OPG professionals, who highlighted the exciting career opportunities available in the skilled trades.
Students also safely tested new types of heavy-duty equipment and took turns at plasma-cutting a sign painted with their school colours and the name of their welding club.

“This event was not only an exciting experience for the young women involved, but also for the OPG staff who helped make it happen,” said Dickerson. “The enthusiasm, positive energy, and genuine interest shown by these young women highlights the importance of building a strong bond with our local communities’ youth, who will soon become the workforce of tomorrow.”
As OPG helps advance the energy transition and works to deliver large electricity projects, the need for skilled trades will only continue to grow. These events and career fairs are helping to promote skilled trades as a viable career path for students to help build the labour pipeline needed to electrify life in one generation.
