OPG’s Lennox Generating Station celebrates 50 years of stepping up for Ontario
At a glance
- This year, Lennox Generating Station is celebrating 50 years of reliable operations for Ontario.
- The thermal station plays a crucial role in supporting Ontario’s energy system during periods of peak demand.
- The plant’s four generating units have been especially busy this winter as extreme cold temperatures have driven electricity demand to record highs.
For five decades, OPG’s Lennox Generating Station (GS) has been a cornerstone of reliability for Ontario’s electricity system.

Since 1976, the station’s flexible thermal generation has ensured the province can meet peak electricity demand, providing rapid, dependable power when it’s needed most. As a dual-fired station, Lennox GS primarily burns natural gas but can switch to residual fuel oil during shortages.
This winter, the station's four 540-megawatt (MW) units have been crucial in keeping the province warm, especially during the frigid cold snaps that have driven electricity demand to record highs.
With a total capacity of 2,160 MW, Lennox can supply enough electricity to power about two million homes. Its ability to quickly respond to changing system needs highlights the essential role natural gas generation plays in keeping Ontario’s energy system stable, resilient, and affordable.
In May 2025, OPG secured a new agreement for Lennox GS through the Independent Electricity System Operator that will see the station supporting the province into 2034 — proof that Lennox’s value to Ontario’s grid is clear, recognized, and needed.
We thank Lennox GS’s dedicated employees and the supportive host communities whose partnership has made this station’s continued success possible.
Here’s to 50 years of keeping Ontario reliably powered!
