Fueled by knowledge, OPG’s Noopa Kuriakose is turning her internship journey with the company into new skills for her future and a desire to share her experience with others.

After finishing her third year of Electrical Engineering at Ontario Tech University, Noopa joined OPG’s Nuclear Sustainability Services in May 2022 as a Design Engineering Intern.

With a determination to follow her dreams and the strong support of her colleagues, the Professional Engineering Year student successfully adapted from full-time school life to work life.

“I consider the nuclear industry to be one big family, and I have always aspired to be a part of it, driven by the desire to explore the role nuclear plays in delivering clean, safe, and reliable power,” she said.

As part of OPG’s effort to attract the right people to electrify life, the company actively provides opportunities for the next generation by recruiting students from universities and colleges for paid-work terms directly related to their field of study.

Throughout her internship, she has also had the opportunity to work with a multidisciplinary team of experienced engineers. This collaborative work environment has allowed her to contribute ideas and gain technical expertise, fostering continuous learning and personal growth.

“One of the highlights of my internship was the opportunity to visit each of OPG’s Nuclear Waste Management Facilities,” Noopa said. “These visits not only broadened my understanding of nuclear waste but also provided me with valuable insights into the procedures involved in the safe storage and disposal of nuclear waste.”

With her career in the nuclear industry just beginning to flourish, Noopa is now sharing her experience with other students to motivate them to pursue a career in the sector.

While working with the North American Young Generation in Nuclear’s Durham Chapter as their Public Relations lead, she connected with high school and university students to explain the important role nuclear power plays in Ontario’s clean electricity system.

Reflecting on her OPG internship experience, Noopa says it’s the best she’s had in her academic career thus far.

“This internship experience allowed me to transform my challenges into electrifying opportunities, power up my skills in the nuclear sector, and inspire others along the way,” she said. “As I move forward in my career, I am confident that the lessons learned, and the knowledge acquired during this internship will continue to shape my perspective and contribute to my growth in the nuclear industry.”

From engineers, to skilled trades, to business professionals, and students, OPG relies on the skills and talents of many diverse people to succeed.
