From nature walks to science experiments to close encounters of the winged kind, OPG’s Saunders Hydro Dam Visitor Centre in Cornwall featured a March Break week full of fun for the whole family.

Several hundred people attended the centre near R.H. Saunders Generating Station to enjoy a full line-up of free events from March 11 to 15.

“This year’s March Break Fun experienced a great turnout, thanks in large part to the great, spring-like weather we experienced over the week,” said Corey Hatt, a Support Services Supervisor with OPG who helped oversee the week’s activities. “We had some great feedback and positive experiences overall from all the kids and families who attended. It was a great week of fun, learning, and exploring.”

A variety of engaging and informative drop-in workshops and shows were held at the centre every day. Key partners who held these sessions included the River Institute, Native North American Travelling College, Mad Science, Scientists in School, Earth Rangers, and the Raisin Region Conservation Authority.

Whether it was science, Indigenous culture, art, or biodiversity, there was plenty to see and do.

One of the more popular attractions this year was the Earth Rangers’ Bring Back the Wild live animal ambassador show, which saw about 300 people turn out to get an up-close look at several animals, including a hawk, a lizard, and a turtle.

Kids also got a chance to become a scientist for a day at the Scientists in School workshop sessions. Here, the children were led through several cool science experiments which demonstrated the basics of physics and chemical reactions.

Families also got to spend some time outdoors with the River Institute, who held nature walks, provided lessons on spotting animal tracks, and helped kids learn more about invertebrate ecology and identification.

Some families in attendance also got to tour the visitor centre to learn more about hydroelectric generation, dam safety, and OPG’s other operations, including nuclear power.

All in all, it was a successful week full of learning, both for the attendees and the OPG staff who helped organize the event.

“It was very encouraging to see so many youth take an interest in science, the environment, and engineering,” said Hatt. “This is an investment in the next generation, to open their minds and educate them, while providing them with some fun. It was a great week and we will continue to work to strengthen the program and add more engaging events in the future.”
