OPG innovations take centre stage at Darlington Open House
More than 3,200 visitors learned how OPG is innovating for tomorrow during the annual open house at the Darlington Energy Complex on Oct. 26.
Wider in focus than previous years, the event included exciting new features and attractions, providing visitors a fun, hands-on learning experience.
In addition to the Darlington Refurbishment, the open house showcased an array of OPG’s other innovative projects, with representation from Renewable Generation, Inspection and Reactor Innovation, and the new IVY electric vehicle charging network. Exhibitors also included a number of OPG partner organizations.
“I was thrilled to have the opportunity to talk to so many members of the public to help them better understand the work we do here at OPG to generate reliable, clean, low-cost energy for the province,” said Dietmar Reiner, Chief Project Officer and Senior Vice President, Enterprise Projects. “It was especially gratifying to see the 120 volunteers who signed up to participate in our open house – they were engaged and welcoming, and acted as fantastic ambassadors for our organization.”

Powering transportation using clean electricity will have a significant impact on combating climate change. Many of the event’s more than 50 exhibitors wowed visitors with some engaging interactive displays. Highlights included a virtual reality demonstration, a mini excavator visitors could operate, plastic suits to try on, Darlington site bus tours, and a birds of prey exhibit, which helped explain OPG’s commitment to the environment.
The event drew a diverse crowd, many of whom travelled long distances to attend.
“This was our biggest open house to date, and it could not have happened without a great deal of hard work and collaboration,” Reiner said. “My thanks to all involved in showing the community how OPG is collaborating for future innovation.”
