Just in time for Earth Day, OPG is celebrating a significant environmental milestone.
With the help of its partners, the company has planted more than 10 million trees and shrubs since 2000 — setting down roots for a healthier, more sustainable Ontario.
The achievement was celebrated during an event on April 15.
Over the past 25 years, OPG has provided funding to more than 30 tree-planting partners, including non-profit organizations, conservation authorities, and Indigenous Nations. These collaborative efforts, with Forests Canada as a primary partner, have been essential to the success of the company’s large-scale tree planting initiatives.
In all, OPG has invested more than $12.5 million in environmental grant funding as part of this program, with the majority dedicated to advancing tree-planting projects that benefit communities and ecosystems across the province.

Trees are one of the most effective natural systems for capturing and storing carbon, making them a key contributor to climate‑change mitigation. They also support healthier communities and ecosystems by producing oxygen, providing shade that helps moderate temperatures, and offering essential habitat for wildlife.
Beyond these benefits, trees also help strengthen landscapes by improving soil stability, enhancing water retention, and reducing the impacts of flooding, drought, and other climate‑related challenges.
Across the company, OPG continues to be engaged in several programs with non-profit and community organizations, conservation authorities, and Indigenous communities to promote biodiversity and strengthen the environment. In addition to tree plantings, since 2000, OPG has helped restore more than 500 acres of wetlands and more than 500 acres of grasslands throughout the province.
OPG’s tree planting efforts directly support the “30 by 30” initiative, which aims to protect 30% of Canada’s lands and waters by 2030, contributing to provincial, national, and international conservation goals.
