A Message from Ken Hartwick, President and CEO of OPG

OPG plays a vital role in the wellbeing of Ontario by generating half of its electricity. This includes reliably powering hospitals, care facilities, clinics, and communities across the province. Now more than ever, Ontarians are counting on our service. That is why we’ve taken steps to ensure the ongoing safe generation of electricity, while protecting the women and men who perform this critical work.

At the same time, we have asked all other employees not directly involved in running our stations to work from home so that OPG can do its part to support the urgent need for social distancing. As Dr. Theresa Tam, Canada’s Chief Public Health Officer has said, now is the time to act if we are to flatten the growth in COVID-19 cases, and help our frontline health care professionals manage the influx of patients. We urge our fellow Ontarians to also heed this life-saving advice.

Operationally, we have activated our Crisis Management Communications Centre, which provides executive level oversight, our Infectious Disease Incident Response Team and our robust business continuity plans. These plans are well documented and practiced on a regular basis and are currently running smoothly. We are confident our culture of safety, preparedness and planning has positioned us to manage this unprecedented challenge.

Thanks to the dedication and cooperation of our 9,000+ employees and union leadership, all our generating units are operating normally, and critical initiatives like Darlington Nuclear’s Unit 2 refurbishment and preparations for the upcoming freshet, continue as planned.
