  Central Ontario is home to 20 of our hydroelectric facilities, some of which, like our Sills Island Generating Station, have been part of their community for more than one hundred years.

  Eastern Ontario is host to one gas-fired generating station and 15 of our hydroelectric generating stations on the St. Lawrence, Ottawa and Madawaska Rivers.

Nuclear Waste Management Facility Performance Report - Q3 2022 Results

Performance update

As part of our commitment to keep you informed, this report tracks performance for OPG's Nuclear Waste Management facilities in the areas of safety, operations, and the environment. It also summarizes significant accomplishments achieved during the third quarter of 2022:

Safety

Total Reportable Injury Frequency (TRIF)

TRIF is a measure of the number of injuries involving OPG employees that result in a fatality, lost time, requiring restricted work or requiring medical treatment per 200,000 hours worked. The current TRIF sits at 0.64 above the year-to-date target of 0.20. The year-end target is not to exceed 0.20.

Transportation Safety

The transportation of waste to our Western facility from Darlington, Pickering and Bruce Power is managed by experienced and skilled drivers. In this quarter, all shipments were made safely and accident-free and the fleet safely travelled 311,832.9 additional kilometres. By the end of September over 5.91 million kilometres were safely travelled.

Environment

Spills to the environment

In this quarter, there were no spills to the environment at our waste facilities that were reportable to a regulatory authority. For detailed environmental information, please refer to the environmental data reports available on our Regulatory Reporting page.

71 DSC

Operational Performance

A total of 71 Used Fuel Dry Storage Containers (DSC) were transferred up to the end of Q3. This was below the year to date target of 81 DSC transfers. Recovery plans are in place to meet the year end target of 110 DSCs.

2,812.2 m³

Waste Minimization

In Q3, through incineration a total of 2,812.2 cubic metres of low-level waste was processed. This was below the year-to-date target, to process 4,321.2 cubic metres. The goal is to process 6,190 cubic metres by year end.
