With the electric vehicle (EV) revolution in full swing at the 2024 Canadian International AutoShow, OPG is showcasing the clean, reliable nuclear power that will be key to fueling the next generation of wheels.

For decades, movies and pop culture have perpetuated several myths and misconceptions about nuclear energy. Now, through the power of movies, OPG is flipping the script to recast nuclear as the clean energy superhero we need to electrify life in one generation.

At this year’s AutoShow, visitors to OPG’s “Electric Drive-in” exhibit have been busy taking in a unique nuclear-powered showtime experience, complete with a Polestar 2 EV and drive-in theatre set up.

Visitors have been enjoying OPG’s drive-in experience here at the AutoShow. They’ve been asking some great questions and learning more about the role safe, reliable, and carbon-free nuclear power will play in powering all of these EVs and electrifying life in one generation.

Stepping into the Swedish all-electric fastback, visitors can enjoy trailers from OPG’s Recast Nuclear campaign while taking in other movie-themed features, including nuclear-themed film posters, a concession stand, and fascinating facts about nuclear power.

Visitors to OPG’s booth can also get their hands on packages of microwaveable popcorn, which feature some myth-popping facts on nuclear, and test their nuclear knowledge for a chance to win a portable phone charger.

“So far, we have had an incredible turnout to our booth and very positive response,” said Adam McClare, Director of Brand Management at OPG. “Visitors have been enjoying OPG’s drive-in experience here at the AutoShow. They’ve been asking some great questions and learning more about the role safe, reliable, and carbon-free nuclear power will play in powering all of these EVs and electrifying life in one generation.”

The sizzling lineup of EVs at this year’s show include Tesla’s much-hyped, and polarizing, Cybertruck, the 2024 Canadian Electric Car and Utility Vehicles of the Year – the Genesis Electrified G80 and the Genesis Electrified GV70 – as well as Hyundai’s Ioniq 5 N, the Charger Daytona SRT Concept, Kia’s EV9, and Porsche's Taycan 4S.

Did you know? Transportation accounts for 30% of Ontario’s carbon emissions. By electrifying cars and other light duty vehicles, we're steering towards a cleaner, more sustainable future.

Today, nuclear continues to meet more than 50% of Ontario’s electricity needs. And the waste created by nuclear power, which is very small in volume, continues to be safely handled and stored, with some by-products like Cobalt-60 and Molybdenum-99 finding critical use as life-saving medical isotopes.

With the EV revolution and Ontario’s expected economic growth and rising demand from electrification, nuclear’s role is only expected to grow in the coming years.

OPG is investing now to shore up more clean, reliable nuclear power for the future, including through its development of the Western world’s first fleet of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) at its Darlington site. The company also continues to invest in the Darlington Refurbishment project, which remains on budget and on track to be completed by 2026, and is planning for the refurbishment of its Pickering Nuclear station.

Learn more about OPG’s nuclear operations here and be sure to check out OPG’s Electric Drive-in at the AutoShow, now on at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre until Feb. 25.
