Darlington New Nuclear Project Update

In the fall of 2020, Ontario Power Generation (OPG) announced the resumption of planning activities for additional new nuclear generation at the Darlington site, by siting a Small Modular Reactor (SMR).

Since that time, the DNNP team has completed extensive studies to confirm the Darlington site remains suitable for new nuclear. In October of last year, the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission approved OPG’s application to renew the site preparation licence for the Darlington New Nuclear Project for a 10-year period, soon after which, OPG announced we will collaborate with GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy to progress our mutual goal of constructing Canada’s first commercial, grid-scale SMR, by the end of the 2020s.

The groundwork the Darlington New Nuclear Project is laying now, as a first mover, will open the door for future SMR projects in our country and beyond, contributing in a tangible and significant way to the fight against climate change.
