Leading by doing.

Climate change is the defining challenge of our lifetimes. By targeting net-zero carbon emissions from Ontario Power Generation's (OPG's) operations by 2040, and acting as a catalyst for Ontario and other economies to reach net-zero by 2050, we will do our part to position Ontario as a climate change leader and help keep the planet from warming to catastrophic levels.

"We are going to be a catalyst for a net-zero Ontario by 2050 because as one of North America's largest, most diverse generators of clean electricity, we are trailblazers. We can show the world that net zero is not only possible, but that it can be the foundation of a strong, growing economy for the future."

VP, Environment, Health and Safety

What is net zero?

How net zero is defined can vary widely across industries and jurisdictions, but generally speaking, net zero happens when the amount of carbon and other heat-trapping gasses we release into the atmosphere is the same as the amount we remove from the atmosphere and store for the long term.

Ontario's electricity system accounts for only about two per cent of our province's greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. That's because of the heavy lifting OPG did in 2014 to close Ontario's coal-fired power plants and invest in cleaner, greener ways of generating power. But our operations still do emit some GHGs, so we are laying out a plan to reach net-zero emissions by 2040 and to support net-zero economies where we operate by 2050.

On this page, you can explore the technologies and approaches OPG will employ to reach net zero as a company, and to catalyze the province toward net zero by 2050.

Electrifying transportation.

By helping to electrify personal vehicles, commercial fleets, and transit services, OPG will help prevent millions of tonnes of CO2 from entering the atmosphere.

Developing new hydro

Hydro power is clean, renewable, and long-lasting. OPG is looking at adding to its 66 hydro stations around Ontario to build on hydro's legacy of low-carbon power.

Nurturing the environment

With operations that span the whole province, OPG has a big role to play in protecting and preserving our environment to help combat climate change.
