2019 Electricity Human Resources Canada Workplace Diversity & Inclusion Champion Award

The recipient is an individual or team who champions diversity and inclusion, is a role model for developing and cultivating diversity strategies in their organization and communicates the rationale for these strategies to employees.

2019 Canadian Electricity Association's Advancement of an Integrated Approach to Sustainability Award

This award is given to a company that has demonstrated outstanding leadership in the development, implementation, and maintenance of an integrated sustainability strategy within the company.

2019 Tom Mitchell Electric Vehicle Leadership Award

Awarded to electricity companies who led an electric vehicle and/or charging station program.

2018 Corporate Award of Excellence from Employee Assistance Society of North America

OPG was one of only two Canadian winners of the 2018 Corporate Award of Excellence from EASNA.

These awards showcase excellence, innovation and the impact of employee assistance programs in the workplace. OPG was recognized for our commitment to a culture that values safety and recognizes mental health is critical to a company's success. OPG received this award in March 2018 and previously in 2010.

2018 OFAH/Mike Reader Conservation Partner Award

Awarded by the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters (OFAH) in appreciation of an OFAH industry partner's significant contributions.

Since 2011, OPG has been the lead sponsor of the Lake Ontario Atlantic Salmon Restoration Program, supporting the release of millions of young Atlantic Salmon; habitat projects restoring key watersheds; and conservation education for thousands of youth.

2017 Canadian Electricity Association Sustainable Electricity Award

OPG's Biodiversity program received recognition from the Canadian Electricity Association at its 2017 Sustainable Electricity awards event.

Our biodiversity program operates on many levels at our site communities and across Ontario. Sustainable practices and responsible corporate policies are mandatory requirements by all CEA members. OPG demonstrated unrivalled commitment to providing electricity services in a sustainable, safe, reliable and cost-effective manner.

Canadian Electricity Association President's Gold Award of Excellence for Employee Safety

The CEA's gold level award goes to member utilities in the top 25% for both All Injury/Illness Frequency and Lost-Time Injury Severity rates for three consecutive years. This recognition placed OPG at the top of the electricity industry in terms of employee safety and is a testament to our continued commitment to occupational health and safety.

Canadian Electricity Association Leadership in External Collaboration and Partnerships

This award is presented to a company with a strong commitment to external collaboration and partnerships with Indigenous peoples, local communities and other stakeholders. OPG received this recognition for our joint ventures with Indigenous groups that successfully developed projects to produce safe, renewable and clean hydroelectricity while providing education, training, jobs and contract opportunities to surrounding Indigenous communities.

Canadian Electricity Association Silver President's Award of Excellence for Employee Safety

The Silver level award goes to member utilities in the top 25% for both All Injury/Illness Frequency and Lost-Time Injury Severity rates for two consecutive years. This recognition placed OPG at the top of the electricity industry for employee safety and is a testament to our commitment to occupational health and safety.

Canadian Electricity Association Environmental Commitment Award

OPG was recognized for our innovative approach to switching the fuel for electricity generation from coal to biomass. In 2014, OPG retired its coal-fired power plants. This one of the single largest climate change actions in the world. OPG's efforts garnered international attention and other jurisdictions looked to follow OPG's leadership in the phase-out of coal-fired generation.

Biomass Magazine's Groundbreaker of the Year Award

OPG was named Groundbreaker of the Year by Biomass Magazine at the International Biomass Conference and Expo. OPG received this recognition for converting our Atikokan Generating Station to the largest 100% biomass-fired power plant in North America. The $170 million conversion from coal to wood pellets was completed in the summer of 2014, and the facility now generates up to 200 MW of renewable power.

Consulting Engineers of Ontario Award of Merit

OPG, Hatch and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF) received this award for Technical Excellence and Innovation for development of the Province's Dam Safety Risk Assessment Tool. The Dam Safety Risk Assessment Tool was jointly developed by OPG and Hatch with input from the MNRF to provide dam owners and regulators with a consistent means to assess risk and evaluate options for safety improvements.

Timmins Chamber of Commerce Nova Award

OPG and partner Moose Cree First Nation were recognized by the Timmins Chamber of Commerce with the De Beers Canada Aboriginal Partnership Award for our work together on the recently completed Lower Mattagami Project.

Canadian Electricity Association Sustainable Electricity - Social Responsibility Award

The CEA recognized OPG for our strong commitment to building and growing mutually beneficial working relationships with First Nations and Métis communities. OPG works with more than 50 First Nations and Métis communities from across Ontario on several electricity projects and partnerships. OPG's First Nation and Métis Relations Policy guides the development of successful partnerships like the Lac Seul Generating Station and the Lower Mattagami River project.

Electric Power Research Institute Environment Sector Technology Transfer Award

OPG was recognized for our Performance and Testing team's contributions to the EPRI Biomass Test Burn conducted at Plant Scholz, Florida. The team's project was part of advanced biomass work to investigate the technical feasibility of using advanced biomass as a repowering option for OPG's thermal generating stations.

Simcoe and District Chamber of Commerce Recognition Award for Service to the Community

This award was presented to employees at OPG's Nanticoke Generating Station to recognize Nanticoke's contribution of reliable electricity, outreach, environmental initiatives and safety awareness to the community for over 40 years.

Canadian Electricity Association Vice President's Award for Safety Excellence

OPG was recognized by the CEA for outstanding safety performance in 2012, representing occupational health and safety achievement in the generation or transmission and distribution operation sectors.

Tunnelling Association of Canada Canadian Project of the Year

OPG was honoured to receive this award for the Niagara Tunnel Project. The 10.2 kilometre tunnel project was completed with a safety record that was twice as good as the industry average. Construction involved the world's largest hard rock tunnel boring machine.

World Association of Nuclear Operators Nuclear Excellence Award

OPG's Fred Dermarkar, (former) Vice President of Engineering Strategy, was the recipient of the prestigious WANO award which recognized contributions to WANO's overall post-Fukushima response.

Environmental Earth Angels Environmental Achievement Award

OPG's Darlington Nuclear Generating Station received the award that recognizes its leadership and commitment to years of outstanding biodiversity improvements and environmental education programs.

Women of Influence Canadian Diversity Champion

OPG's Barb Keenan, (former) Senior Vice President of People and Culture, was recognized as a Canadian diversity champion - senior leaders who are consistent in their dedication and commitment to leading and developing innovative diversity initiatives and programs in the workplace. Barb supported diversity and inclusiveness initiatives across OPG, including the Code of Business Conduct, Empowered Women Leadership Training, and employee resource groups such as the Native Circle.

Canadian Electricity Association Sustainability Company of the Year

OPG was recognized for our commitment to minimizing our environmental footprint through innovative initiatives and partnerships, and our active engagement with Aboriginal Peoples and stakeholders.
