Who’s electrifying life in Ontario at OPG?

From engineers, to skilled trades, to business professionals, and students, OPG relies on the skills and talents of many diverse people to succeed.

Our engineers are an integral part of our business and we consistently hire engineers from a variety of disciplines across our worksites. Most commonly, we look for engineers who have completed their studies in mechanical, electrical, computer or civil engineering.

Our operations also depend heavily on skilled tradespeople, with about 50% of our current workforce in the skilled trades. In addition to partnering with the Power Workers’ Union in all our locations, OPG partners with the Building Trades Unions to hire skilled trades, including electricians, boilermakers, and millwrights. We also offer training program opportunities across OPG in both our nuclear stations for nuclear operators in training, and hydroelectric operations for hydroelectric operating technician trainees.

Beyond engineers and trades, a wide variety of professionals support our business in many ways across the province. These important roles include positions in project management, supply chain and procurement, human resources, health and safety, finance, and law.

Finally, OPG actively provides opportunities for the next generation by recruiting students from universities and colleges for paid-work terms directly related to their field of study.

Engineers are an integral part of our business. OPG consistently hires engineers from a variety of disciplines across our worksites. Most commonly, we look for engineers who have completed their studies in mechanical, electrical, computer or civil engineering however we also hire from the following disciplines:

Approximately 50 per cent of OPG’s current workforce are in the Skilled Trades, and there are many other positions held by skilled tradespeople that span different facilities and work environments province-wide. As a skilled tradesperson working for OPG, you will play a vital role in powering homes and businesses across Ontario 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. You will be a valued part of our team, making an important contribution to Ontario’s electricity needs. 

Trades Careers Directly with OPG

Eligibility 

The amount of experience required depends on the position. Mechanical Technician, Electrical & Control Technician, and Inspection & Maintenance Technician positions require a Certificate of Qualification (C of Q). Many of the positions may also require completion of a college program or equivalent. The specific job posting will indicate what experience is required. 

Trades careers with OPG via the Building Trade  Unions

In addition to partnering with the Power Workers Union in all our locations, OPG partners with the Building Trades Unions to hire the skilled trades.  

Apprenticeships

The OPG Nuclear Apprentice Program is a 4-year training program and its objective is to ensure individuals gain the knowledge and skills necessary to perform Mechanical or Electrical & Control Technician work in a nuclear generating station. 

Apprenticeships offered are: 

  • Electrical 
  • Instrumentation 
  • Millwright 

Apprenticeships are posted all year round with opportunities varying from year to year, based on our business needs. 

Operators

We offer training program opportunities across OPG in both Nuclear Generating Stations (Nuclear Operator In-Training) and Hydroelectric Generating Stations (Hydroelectric Operating Technician Trainees). These training programs are a combination of both classroom and field training.  Being an OPG trainee means you can apply your knowledge, broaden your sills and make a valuable contribution to an organization that is vital to Ontario’s success.  

Trainee Programs

Nuclear Operator In-Training (NOIT) 

This position is a training program to become a Nuclear Operator. Training can take up to 18 months to complete depending on the assigned stream and NOIT’s will gain on the job experience by working 8- to 12-hours rotating shifts.   

Nuclear Operators are responsible for keeping the nuclear generating station running. They make rounds of their designated areas within the plant to check and maintain the operating status of equipment, complete routines and regular inspections and perform tests on equipment. 

Candidates must have at minimum a secondary school diploma, with grade 12 University preparation courses in math and physics and/or chemistry. Although, typically we hire candidates with either a diploma in a related study such as Power, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or a four year Engineering university degree.  

Hydroelectric Operating Technician Trainee (HOTT) 

The Hydroelectric Operating Technician Trainee program is two years in length and will require the selected candidates to complete six classroom training sessions, self study modules and gain on the job experience by working 8- and 12-hours rotating shifts.  Travel and occasional overnight stays at other OPG sites and remote locations is required.  The trainees will be required to successfully complete all training requirements and pass a final exam in order to become Hydroelectric Operating Technicians.  

Hydroelectric Operating Technician Trainee is responsible for carrying out and overseeing operating activities to ensure the safe and reliable operation of equipment, hydroelectric generators and control dams.  This role is responsible to maintain employee and public safety, while managing levels and flows of rivers, ensuring they are in compliance with environmental requirements.  

Candidates must have secondary school diploma, along with a 2-year Power Engineering, Instrumentation or Electrical diploma.

Testing 

If you meet the selection criteria, you may be invited for testing. Should you successfully pass these tests, you may be invited to an interview. Please note that these are not tests for which you can study.

Ontario Power Generation recruits students from universities or colleges for a paid work term directly related to their field of study. As a student, you will have an opportunity to work on a variety of projects that will complement your studies at school.  In addition, you will work in an environment that has supportive co-workers, including other students, and opportunities to participate in social activities and charity events at our various work sites. Below is a short description of the Student Recruitment Programs:

Professional Engineering Year Student
  • 12-16 months
  • Must be enrolled in an internship program with their University
  • Must have completed 3rd year of a 4-year program or 4th year of a 5-year program
  • Minimum 70% cGPA
  • Postings in September/October with positions starting in May
Co-Op/Developmental Student
  • 4 or 8 Months; Max 2 terms
  • Must be either: registered in a co-op program, OR a Full-Time student returning to school in the same program following the work term, OR a Full-Time student requiring the work term or co-op placement to graduate
  • Minimum 70% cGPA
  • Postings in January/May/September with positions starting in May/September/January
