OPG proud: Employee’s son brings home World Junior gold

Millions of Canadians celebrated as Team Canada’s juniors completed a stunning comeback against Russia to win gold at the 2020 World Junior Championship on Sunday.

But the victory was extra special for one OPG employee and his family.

Jay Dellandrea, a Senior Manager of Health and Safety Field Services at OPG, looked on with pride as his son Ty, an assistant captain for Team Canada, and his teammates overcame a 3-1 deficit to strike gold.

The 4-3 win over Russia marked Canada’s 18^th gold medal at the world juniors and the team’s third championship in the last six years.

The family was all smiles as they welcomed back Ty and the rest of his teammates from the Czech Republic, gold medals hanging from their necks and championship trophy in hand.

“We are truly grateful to be in a great community, region and country, and their support is felt and appreciated,” said proud father Jay.

The 19-year-old Ty, a centre, had a successful tournament, posting three goals and two assists in seven games played.

Born in Port Perry, Ont., Ty was drafted 13^th overall in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft by the Dallas Stars and is currently playing for the Flint Firebirds of the Ontario Hockey League.
