OPG Winter Festival of Lights illuminates Niagara Falls for 37th season
Millions of sparkling, colourful lights will once again transform Niagara Falls into a winter wonderland this holiday season.
For decades, the annual Ontario Power Generation Winter Festival of Lights has stirred up the festive spirit for countless families from Ontario and around the world. On Nov. 16, the 37th season will kick off with an exciting opening ceremony.
The free opening event starts at 3 p.m. at Queen Victoria Park and will feature a flipping of the switch ceremony, food trucks, and special guest performances by the Niagara Ballet, Niagara Star Singers, and cast members of Oh Canada Eh? Capping off the evening will be a seven-minute-long fireworks show at 8 p.m.
The festival, which attracted more than 1.8 million visitors last year, runs through the entire holiday season, wrapping up on Jan. 12.

The festival’s hallmark attraction remains the eight-kilometre-long illumination route, which boasts three million lights and stretches along the Niagara Parkway, Dufferin Islands, and throughout Niagara Falls. Other returning attractions include “Impulse,” which features 15 illuminated seesaws that increase in intensity with motion, and the “Passage,” a 25-metre-long illuminated tunnel.
New this year is an animated Timbits Hockey display and two giant Christmas ornaments. Also featured will be seven light art displays designed by artists from around the world in partnership with the Light Art Collection of Amsterdam.
Twenty-five firework shows, taking place every Friday night at 9 p.m. between Nov. 16 and Jan. 11, will light up the skies over the falls.
