Statement regarding recent Globe and Mail story on Pickering Nuclear Generating Station

The Pickering Nuclear Generating Station continues to serve Ontarians safely and reliably by producing carbon-free power around the clock, day in and day out. It does so because the professionals who work there are dedicated and meticulous in their jobs, and because the nuclear sector has more rigorous, regulatory oversight than any other industry. Pickering consistently meets or exceeds the most stringent of safety criteria and is considered one of the world’s top performing nuclear stations by the independent World Association of Nuclear Operators.

The data referenced in the recent Globe and Mail story did not pass our quality assurance, therefore was not used by OPG staff in determining the station’s fitness for service capability. The data OPG provides to the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) are gathered as part of our inspection program and undergo a rigorous quality assurance assessment before being conservatively and carefully analyzed.

In its Detailed Record of Decision for our most recent Pickering Nuclear licence renewal, the CNSC stated that an adequate program was in place to ensure all fuel channels are fit for service and the station can safely operate to the prescribed licence timelines. OPG will continue to meet stringent regulatory and licensing requirements, including regular inspections and maintenance, and ensuring fitness for service of station components.

Our people live and work in Pickering and surrounding communities. Public and environmental safety is more than a top priority; it is part of who we are.
