Environmental assessment process begins for Canada's first proposed SMR

Global First Power, with Ultra Safe Nuclear Corporation OPG, to begin EA for proposed commercial demonstrator unit at Chalk River Site

Mississauga, ON – Today, the Canadian Federal government issued the notice of commencement of an environmental assessment (EA) for a small modular reactor project proposed by Global First Power (GFP) with support from nuclear-technology-innovator Ultra Safe Nuclear Corporation™ (USNC) and Ontario Power Generation (OPG). This marks a significant “first” for the Canadian nuclear industry. Read more.

GFP, USNC and OPG propose to construct and operate a 15 megawatt (MW) thermal (approximately 5 MW electrical) Micro Modular Reactor (MMR™) plant at the Chalk River Laboratories, owned by Atomic Energy of Canada Limited and operated by Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL).

With the commencement of the EA, detailed studies will begin. In parallel, GFP will provide CNL with the required information as they continue their proponent selection process, and provide the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) with information to support the licence application process.

If approved, the project would serve as a model for future SMR deployments that could support remote industrial applications and provide a viable option to displace fossil fuel use. Ultimately, the MMR model could be a key contributor to an important solution for all of Canada: meeting energy needs while enabling other renewable energy sources and helping to achieve environment and climate change goals.

About Global First Power

Global First Power specializes in project development, licensing, ownership and operation of small nuclear power plants to supply clean power and heat to remote industrial operations and residential settlements. GFP finances and owns the nuclear plants and provides dispatchable and reliable energy to clients under long-term supply contracts. GFP’s business proposition reduces clients’ project and financial risks by: eliminating the clients’ capital requirements to build power plants; reducing the energy cost; reducing greenhouse gas emissions; and eliminating the future energy cost variability.

About Ontario Power Generation

Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is one of the most diverse electricity generators in North America. It produces about half of the electricity Ontarians rely on every day, and its clean, safe, power costs an average of 40% less than other generators in Ontario.

About USNC™

USNC is a vertical integrator of nuclear power technologies, committed to bringing safe, commercially competitive, and reliable nuclear energy to markets throughout the world. The company strictly adheres to inherent and intrinsic safety principles through technological innovation in fuels, materials, and design practices. The privately-held company maintains its headquarters in Seattle, Wash., with subsidiaries across the globe. Currently, USNC’s MMR designs are leading the way in providing energy as a service for remote communities and mining operations in Northern Canada.
