Refurbishment of Darlington Nuclear Generating Station’s Unit 2 reactor has hit another milestone as the last of 960 end fittings has been removed.

The work was part of the campaign to remove components from the reactor core to make way for new parts that will extend Unit 2’s power-producing capacity by approximately 30 years.

End fittings are found at the end of each fuel channel and allow for the transfer of new fuel and removal of used fuel from the reactor.

​Completion of end fitting removal sets the stage for pressure tubes to be pulled. This next work series relies on engineered tooling mounted on the massive Re-tube Tooling Platform inside the vault. The tools are controlled remotely, from the Re-tube Control Centre. This will be the first time the tools will be synchronized to work simultaneously on both reactor faces.

Producing about 20 per cent of the province’s electricity, Darlington Nuclear is one of the best performing and safest nuclear generating stations in the world. Ninety-six per cent of all money spent on refurbishing the power plant is going right back to Ontario-based manufacturers, contractors and other skilled workers, giving the province’s economy a major boost.
