OPG works with TTN youth on environmental training program
Recently, OPG and Taykwa Tagamou Nation (TTN) partnered with Blue Heron Environmental on an Environmental Training Program for Indigenous youth. The hands-on program included four days of in-person training for 20 summer students from TTN which introduced participants to the environmental field.
Participants spent time learning about various environmental monitoring techniques including water/air/soil sampling protocols, legislation and regulatory requirements. The youth also had the opportunity to learn about bridging the gap between Traditional Ecological Knowledge and western science.
By learning more about environmental permitting, inspections and approval reviews, the program helps to educate and empower young adults to be keepers of the land and to preserve the environment for future generations.
Gathering of Our People 2024
Traveling by planes, trains and water taxis, OPG Staff from across the province spent time in Moose Factory for the annual Gathering of Our People (GOOP) event. The Gathering of Our People event encourages Moose Cree First Nation members to head back to Moose Factory to connect with their culture, heritage and community.
GOOP featured local food and craft vendors, a pow-wow, an Indigenous fashion show and nightly entertainment, including Los Lobos, Tom Cochrane and William Prince.
OPG took part in the vendor hall with a booth that included the popular trivia wheel where attendees answered a hydro-related question to win a prize. Staff were also giving away OPG-branded items, such as fish rulers, bags and lights, and speaking to community members about OPG and our operations in the area.
The week-long event provided an opportunity to highlight OPG’s partnership with the community and promote our Reconciliation Action Plan.
OPG takes part in highway cleanup
With a focus on environmental stewardship, OPG staff participated in a highway cleanup this summer. The Adopt- a-Highway event had staff out on a 10-kilometer stretch of Highway 655 just outside of Timmins, where they picked up approximately 30 bags of litter from the side of the road.
“We had a great staff turnout for the highway cleanup,” said Melodie Schmidt, event organizer and Site Environmental Advisor. “It’s important to us to get involved in the community in a variety of ways, and we look forward to this annual event.”
OPG first got involved with Adopt-a-Highway in 2018. This Ontario-wide program allows individuals and companies to adopt a section of a provincial highway to help keep the highways clean.
OPG sites across the Northeast a hive of project activity
As OPG continues in its commitment to project excellence, maintaining and refurbishing its assets remains a top priority.
Across the Northeast, a variety of projects are now in execution. At Little Long Generating Station (GS) and Smoky Falls GS, dam safety improvements are being completed to ensure the continued resilience of those assets in the face of extreme weather events. Frederick House Lake Dam is undergoing a rehabilitation, involving repairs to the concrete, and replacement of stop logs, gates, and other equipment. Abitibi Canyon GS is currently undergoing projects such as a transformer roof replacement and unit refurbishments, and Otter Rapids GS is seeing much activity, with unit refurbishments and sluice gate upgrades. Further south, on the Matabitchuan River, Matabitchuan GS is gearing up for a redevelopment project, set to begin in 2025. All of these projects speak to OPG’s commitment to safety and ensuring that our assets can continue to control water and generate power for generations to come.
