Four OPG sites recertified by Wildlife Habitat Council

Four OPG sites have received recertification from the Wildlife Habitat Council (WHC) in recognition of initiatives to protect and support local biodiversity.
OPG’s R.H. Saunders Generating Station (GS), Wesleyville site, and the Darlington and Pickering nuclear stations (grouped as Nuclear) received “Gold” certification by the WHC, while the dual-fueled Lennox GS achieved “Silver”.
The three-year designations recognize the outstanding environmental and biodiversity work continuing to take place at OPG’s sites across Ontario.
At OPG’s recertified sites, various projects are underway to protect the environment. These include protecting migratory songbirds, creating and maintaining habitat for birds of prey, establishing new habitats for wetland plants and animals, as well as education and outreach programs focused on advancing conservation.

The WHC certifies conservation programs on corporate lands around the world and promotes environmental management through partnerships and education. All applications for certification are reviewed and scored on an individual basis by a third party against project-specific criteria, with a score falling into three categories: Certified, Certified Silver, and Certified Gold.
Over the years, OPG has received numerous recognitions from the WHC. In April 2022, OPG’s Niagara Operations was recertified Gold. And in June 2021, OPG’s Western Waste Management Facility, now known as Nuclear Sustainability Services, was awarded the WHC’s Gold Program of the Year, the highest level of recognition achievable from the WHC. The facility was certified Gold in March 2021.
Across the company, OPG is engaged in a number of programs with conservation authorities and environmental agencies that range from habitat restoration to planting native trees and shrubs to managing ponds and wetlands. These nature-based solutions are important to helping OPG reach its climate change goals outlined in its Climate Change Plan.
