Awarded by Canadian Occupational Safety magazine, the second annual Top Women in Safety report celebrates outstanding female health and safety professionals from across the country, with the winners selected from hundreds of nominations. Recipients were chosen based on their professional accomplishments, as well as their contributions to advancing equity, diversity and inclusion (ED&I) in the workplace and the entire health and safety sector.

The full list of winners was released May 9 and is available on the Canadian Occupational Safety website.

As a Section Manager in OPG’s Corporate Environment, Health, and Safety department, Beech-Hawley was recognized for her efforts to help make workplaces safer across the province, as well as her work to promote health and safety in the community.

“It’s a tremendous honour to be recognized among so many amazing women working in safety,” said Beech-Hawley. “Throughout my career, I have had the privilege of working with and learning from knowledgeable and passionate health and safety professionals. I know that bringing people together to share and collaborate is the key to improving health and safety, not just at OPG but at workplaces across the province. I think of health and safety as not just a workplace issue but including all aspects of physical and mental well-being at home and in the community and try to contribute from that perspective wherever I can.”

And as a Canadian Certified Professional Ergonomist, she leads OPG’s musculoskeletal disorder prevention strategy team, providing ergonomics expertise and support for OPG projects and programs.

Both in her professional and personal life, Beech-Hawley is a passionate advocate for diversity and inclusion, serving as a member of one of OPG’s Equity, Diversity and Inclusion committees, and as a member of Women in Nuclear and the Women in Occupational Health and Safety Society.

Outside of the office, she brings her unique experience and expertise to benefit her community as she volunteers as a patient and family experience advisor at Durham Region’s Lakeridge Health and is an active member at Dunbarton-Fairport United Church, an affirming congregation welcoming to everyone. She also sponsors several children in various countries and supports charities that help local residents with food, income and housing security.
