PowerNews Fall 2020

Throughout these extraordinary times, OPG’s employees and operations have continued to safely generate clean, reliable electricity for Ontario’s homes, hospitals and care facilities.

As we help power the province through the pandemic and aid in its economic recovery, OPG is looking to tackle big issues like climate change to help secure a carbon-free future.

In the fall issue of PowerNews, OPG’s quarterly news roundup, we detail the company’s recently launched Climate Change Plan and the ambitious blueprint that will help OPG and the markets where it operates achieve net-zero carbon economies.

A key part of this plan is nuclear power in the form of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), the next generation of nuclear technology. At Darlington, OPG recently announced it is resuming planning activities for a new nuclear build at the site with the goal of hosting an SMR by as early as 2028, pending necessary approvals.

This issue features some of the other ongoing efforts to help OPG reach its climate change targets, including the Darlington Refurbishment project, which recently saw Unit 3 successfully defuelled, and the redevelopment of the Calabogie hydro station in eastern Ontario.

Meanwhile, OPG continues to help safeguard public health during this critical time with the latest harvest of Cobalt-60 at Pickering Nuclear. The life-saving isotopes will soon be used to sterilize medical devices at hospitals and care facilities as they continue to fight COVID-19.

Whether it's achieving our climate change goals or ensuring stable, safe operations during the pandemic, OPG will continue to rely on its dedicated and committed employees. Employees like Nancy England, who is helping to keep R.H. Saunders Generating Station running smoothly, and Farrukh Siddiqi, who was recently recognized for his career-long dedication to safety at Darlington.

It’s through their efforts, and the efforts of all of OPG’s employees, that Ontario will be able to power through these complex times toward a brighter tomorrow.
