OPG teams with local Scouts to plant new trees in Town of Renfrew
At a glance
- This spring, OPG helped plant about 120 native trees and shrubs in the Town of Renfrew.
- The environmental initiative was supported by members from the local Scouts group.
- OPG has committed to supporting the planting of more than one million trees over the next two years to reach 10 million trees planted since 2000.
Across Ontario, OPG continues to strengthen the environment – one tree and one shrub at a time.
Since 2000, the company and its biodiversity partners have planted more than nine million native trees and shrubs near its generating operations. By 2025, OPG aims to reach a total of 10 million trees planted to fulfill one of the key commitments outlined in its Climate Change Plan.
This nature-based solution is helping to reduce carbon in the atmosphere, mitigate flooding in communities, and provide life-giving oxygen as well as habitat for wildlife.
This May, OPG continued to help put shovels in the ground for even more tree plantings and support a sustainable future for an important host community.
Just in time for spring, the company partnered with the Town of Renfrew to help plant about 120 native trees and shrubs at the 146-acre Ma-te-way Park.
As nature’s ultimate carbon-capturing machine, trees are one of the most effective ways to mitigate climate change. |

OPG provided the resources and town staff facilitated the May 25 planting. Providing a helping hand were members of the local Scouts group, who came armed with shovels and gloves.
“The planting was a great success,” said Nathan Duxbury, an Environment, Chemistry, and Safety Supervisor with OPG. “We were happy to help support the Town of Renfrew, and we were happy to provide an opportunity for youth to learn how to plant, while giving them a direct connection to the beautification of the area.”
The new tree species planted at the site included, among others, Yellow Birch, Bur Oak, and Silver Maple. The new shrubs included juneberry, highbush cranberry, nannyberry species, and more.
“The Town of Renfrew is excited to partner with OPG to enhance our public green space at Ma-te-way Park. This partnership will help the Town meet some of its environmental goals around urban forestry,” said Amanda Springer, Manager of Environmental Services at the Town of Renfrew. “Ma-te-way Park was strategically selected as the planting location as the trees planted here will provide shade to users and enhance the natural beauty of the site for generations.”
Across the company, OPG continues to be engaged in a number of programs with conservation authorities and agencies to promote biodiversity, protect the environment, and strengthen Ontario’s communities. These range from habitat restoration to tree plantings to managing ponds and wetlands.
In addition to its tree-planting goal, OPG has committed to advancing other nature-based solutions as part of its Climate Change Plan. These include creating/restoring 500 acres of grasslands and creating/restoring 250 acres of wetlands.
