Corporate Safety

OPG’s ongoing commitment to safety excellence resulted in many individual sites and businesses celebrating major safety performance milestones consisting of multiple years without a lost time injury.

On June 14, 2010 OPG became the first employer in Ontario to be awarded the ZeroQuest Platinum Award from the Infrastructure Health and Safety Association (IHSA) at their Annual General Meeting in Toronto. This award is the highest level of recognition a company can achieve in the ZeroQuest program and recognizes OPG’s efforts to sustain and continuously improve our safety performance, health and safety management systems and safety culture.

On hand to accept the ZeroQuest Platinum Award from the Infrastructure Health and Safety Association (IHSA) on behalf of OPG were (from left to right), Wayne Robbins, Scott Martin, Mary Lou Sinclair, Rod Sheppard (President, The Society of Energy Professionals), Tom Mitchell, Brad Carnduff (Vice President, Power Workers’ Union), Barb Keenan, John Murphy and Frank Chiarotto.

OPG’s pursuit to Platinum began in 2005, when OPG became the first company to achieve the Gold Award, following detailed document reviews and employee interviews in Corporate and at Nuclear, Thermal and Hydro sites. OPG succeeded in achieving Platinum by sustaining this Gold level over the next four years based on annual assessments at OPG sites.

OPG has achieved this level of performance through the development of a safety culture where employees are expected to consistently build safety into every task they perform each day. This safety culture is founded on the implementation of targeted risk mitigation programs and the OHSAS 18001-based safety management systems. OPG is deeply committed to the safety of its workers, young and old alike. We make absolutely sure that our young workers have the skills and training they need to perform their jobs safely and require our experienced workers to take regular safety training courses.

As a company committed to performance excellence, we strive for the ultimate goal of zero injuries.
