Regulation of Isotopes in Canada
Isotopes are regulated substances under the CNSC's Nuclear Safety and Control Act. Production, processing, storage and transportation of isotopes must be licensed by the authority. Commercial transactions of isotope products and services are part of the regulated activities. OPG takes a proactive role in ensuring due diligence is exercised internally and by our counter parties in adhering to, or exceeding the required standards.

Following are some facts pertaining to such transactions:

  • Possession and use of isotopes are licensed by the CNSC in Canada or local federal or provincial regulatory authorities having jurisdiction in other countries.

  • Packaging and transportation of isotopes are regulated by OPG's standards, CNSC, IAEA and Transport Canada or local federal or provincial regulatory authorities having jurisdiction in other countries.

  • Sales and shipment of isotopes may also be subjected to Canadian Department of Foreign Affairs & International Trade's approvals or local federal or provincial regulatory authorities having jurisdiction in other countries.

  • Purchasers must provide written statements to OPG with a brief description of the end use of isotopes supplied, and that Purchaser shall not use, resell or retransfer any such material without the written approval of OPG.

  • Sales of isotope products and services are to be conducted under commercial agreements signed between OPG and the Purchaser.
