EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS
Public and employee safety has been a primary goal both in the design and operation of Canadian nuclear stations. The nuclear industry in Canada can proudly say no member of the public has ever received a harmful dose of radiation from a Canadian reactor.
Yet, like any modern industrial operation, we must always look at our operation to ensure that safety is not only preached, but practiced. And a good part of any safety program includes conducting regular emergency training to ensure that we are prepared for even the remotest contingencies. Such exercises are carried out regularly and frequently at the Darlington and Pickering Nuclear Stations in Durham Region.
Likewise, it is important for the public to be aware of what they should know and what they should do in the event of an emergency in their community.
While the chance of a severe nuclear emergency is extremely remote, it only makes sense to plan and prepare if you live within 10km of a nuclear facility. Being prepared in advance and knowing what actions to take can better protect your personal safety.

Three Steps
The main thing to remember in the event of a nuclear emergency is: Go. Listen. Follow.
Go inside and turn on your radio or television.
Listen to the media reports.
Follow instructions provided by the Province.
As in any emergency, residents should remember to stay calm and don't evacuate the area unless advised to do so by Provincial authorities. Sometimes it is safest to remain in doors at home or work. It would also be helpful if residents avoid using the telephone as this may impact emergency communications.
OPG, regional and local governments work hand-in-hand with the province in planning, practicing, and providing public information on nuclear emergency preparedness.
Advance planning and preparedness can go a long way during an emergency - make sure you're ready, just in case.
