Energy Efficiency

Beginning in 1994, OPG’s predecessor company,
Ontario Hydro, committed to an energy efficiency
program, and 13 years later the program remains highly
successful. From 1994 – 2006, OPG’s annualized
energy savings have increased by 2,167 GWh, resulting
in savings of $100 million per year (4.6 cents per
kilowatt-hour) and annual emission savings of 2.16
million tonnes of CO2.
OPG Cumulative Energy Savings (GWh/year)

In 2006, OPG achieved an internal energy efficiency savings of 55.7 GWh, which exceeded the company’s self-imposed energy efficiency target of 26.5 GWh. Energy savings in 2006 originated primarily from hydroelectric operations, such as:
- 15.4 GWh/yr from turbine runner upgrades on 2 units at Abitibi Canyon Generating Station
- 14.8 GWh/yr from turbine runner upgrades on 2 units a Caribou Falls Generating Station
- 8.5 GWh/yr from re-stroking (i.e., an improvement to output cabling which increases servo motor stroke) on one unit at DeDew Falls Generating Station
- 6 GWh/yr from a turbine runner upgrade on one unit at Ranney Falls Generating Station, and
- 4.3 GWh/yr from two transformer replacements at Mountain Chute and one runner upgrade at Chats Falls Generating Station.
Energy efficiency improvements from fossil-fuelled
operations totaled 6.4 GWh/yr (i.e., 4.0 GWh/yr from
Lennox, 1.0 GWh/yr from Lambton, and 1.4 GWh/yr from
Thunder Bay Generating Station).
