Deep Geologic Repository

Public Review Continues for DGR
April 26, 2013

The public review period for the Deep Geologic Repository (DGR) environmental assessment, which began on Feb. 3, 2012, will end on May 24, 2013. That is the final date for public comments on the Environmental Impact Statement, Preliminary Safety Report, and other documents supporting OPG’s application for a site preparation and construction licence for the project.

The Joint Review Panel (JRP) will announce a public hearing once it determines that the information adequately responds to EIS guidelines. The public will be notified 90 days prior to the start of the hearing and will be provided details on how to participate.

Regular project updates are provided through DGR newsletters, speeches, presentations, and at community events with the DGR mobile exhibit. Members of the public are encouraged to ask questions and stay informed on the project.

The Project

OPG has safely transported, processed and stored nuclear waste for more than 40 years. With the support of Bruce County municipalities, OPG has proposed to construct and operate a DGR that would safely isolate and contain low and intermediate level waste. The DGR would be located 680 metres below ground, in stable rock formations over 450 million years old.
