Darlington Nuclear Refurbishment
OPG’s CANDU reactors are designed to provide decades of safe and reliable electricity generation. Mid-way through the reactor’s life, replacement of some of the key reactor and station components is required to allow for continued operation for approximately 30 additional years. This is called a refurbishment.

OPG is moving forward with plans for the mid-life refurbishment of the Darlington station. Planning for refurbishment is progressing well along two key avenues: the environmental and safety approvals process; and the station condition assessment and infrastructure development process.

OPG Submits Documents for Regulatory Approvals

OPG has completed the Integrated Safety Review and submitted the findings to the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) on October 27. The Integrated Safety Review concluded the units at the Darlington Nuclear station can safely operate for the duration of its current design life and for 25-30 years post-refurbishment, posing no risk to the public or station employees.

in December, OPG also submitted the Environmental Impact Statement and technical documents in support of the Environmental Assessment for refurbishment and continued operations. OPG’s studies conclude Darlington Refurbishment and continued operations will not result in any significant adverse effects, given mitigation.
