Darlington Refurbishment

The Project
OPG's Darlington Nuclear Generating Station is one of the top-performing nuclear stations in the world. For 20 years, Darlington has produced safe, reliable, economical power every second of every day for roughly two million homes.
Located in the Municipality of Clarington, Darlington is a CANDU pressurized heavy water nuclear generating station. The four reactors that make up the station have a combined net power output of 3,512 megawatts. They were placed into operation between 1990 and 1993 and the station has operated safely and continuously since then.
Refurbishment of CANDU reactors is an aspect of its design and a requirement during its operational service life. Refurbishment will allow Darlington to continue operating until approximately 2055.
OPG is proceeding with definition phase work. This includes environmental and safety approvals, engineering studies, infrastructure development, and integrated project planning.
In March 2013, the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) issued its decision that the Darlington Refurbishment and Continued Operation will not result in any significant adverse environmental effects, given mitigation. For more information, read OPG’s media release.
