Pickering B Relicence Hearing
Day 2, May 14, Ajax, Ontario

On June 30, 2008, the current five-year operating licence for the Ontario Power Generation (OPG) Pickering B Nuclear Generating Station will expire.

The station is operated under regulation of the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC), which is responsible under the Nuclear Safety and Control Act (NSCA) for regulating all nuclear facilities and nuclear-related activities in Canada.

Before any person or company can prepare a site for, construct, operate, decommission or abandon a nuclear facility, or possess, use, transport or store nuclear substances, they must obtain a licence issued by the CNSC.

OPG has requested a five-year licence be granted from the period of July 1, 2008 to June 30, 2013. Following detailed review of the Pickering B station condition and the Pickering B record of operation during the current license period, CNSC staff, responsible for oversight of Pickering B operations, have recommended to the CNSC Commission Tribunal to grant a five-year licence to OPG’s Pickering B Nuclear Station during this period.

A Notice of Public Hearing was published by the CNSC on Dec. 20, 2007 to announce that the CNSC would be holding a two-day public hearing on the application OPG for the renewal of the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station B Operating Licence.

Day 1 of the hearing was held Feb. 20 in Ottawa, Ontario.

Day 2 of the hearing, including presentations by interested parties will be held May 14:
Place: Ajax Convention Centre, 550 Beck Crescent, Ajax, Ontario
The hearing will follow the agenda currently available on the CNSC website:

Further information on the relicence process and the mandate of the CNSC as a nuclear regulator can also be found on the CNSC website.
