HISTORICAL NOTE:

Mountain Chute was the first hydroelectric project in southern Ontario following the R.H. Saunders development on the St. Lawrence River, in 1958.

The expanse of water created upstream from the dam is named Centennial Lake. Beneath its waters are the remains of the Black Donald Mining settlement and graphite mine, abandoned in 1947 after being worked out.

MISCELLANEOUS:

Mountain Chute marked the completion of the first stage of a program to redevelop the Madawaska River for the purpose of meeting peak requirements on the system. Later stages include additions to the capacities of Barrett Chute and Stewartville generating stations.
