UPPER MATTAGAMI REDEVELOPMENTS

Hundreds of Project Jobs Created

OPG is adding more green renewable energy by redeveloping the Wawaitin, Sandy Falls, Lower Sturgeon, and Hound Chute generating stations located in Northeastern Ontario. This is a major investment in clean energy for Ontario and has created hundreds of project jobs over a three year period, between 1000 and 1200 person years of direct employment. At the peak the contractor had approximately 500 people were working on the project.

Currently over 300 people are working on the project. About 130 are electricians, Ironworkers, pipe fitters, millwrights, boilermakers. Over 100 are labourers including form setters and cement workers. The work is carefully planned by the 80 managers, supervisors and project engineers hired to work on the project. The remaining workforce includes teamsters, carpenters, sheet metal workers, clerical, technical security and safety. In addition it is estimated that for every direct job about .65 indirect jobs are created, i.e. people working to supply services to people working on the project.

When complete the brand new generating stations combined capacity will virtually double from 23MW to 44 MW. Annual energy will increase from 134 giga watt-hours (“GWh”) to 223 GWh which is enough electricity to meet the needs of about 22,000 households. Construction began in 2008 with KIEWIT-ALARIE a Partnership (KAP) as the design-build contractor and is expected to be completed in 2011.
