Nanticoke Generating Station

The Nanticoke Generating Station (GS) is located
on the north shore of Lake Erie in Haldimand
County, Ontario and started operation in 1972.
Completed in 1978 at a cost of over $800 million,
its eight generating units are capable of producing
3,640 megawatts (MW) of power. An additional
$900 million has been spent on energy efficiency,
reliability and environmental improvements since
construction was completed.
Flexibility has been
a hallmark as the station’s annual production has
ranged from 6 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) to as
high as 24 billion kWh, enough electricity to run
two million households for a full year. Over its life
Nanticoke has produced over 500 billion kWh.
The plant currently employs more than 600 people
from the surrounding community. Their skills and
experience are essential to reliable operation.
Looking to the future, OPG is testing biomass fuel
at Nanticoke. While electricity production would
be much lower, biomass in the form
of wood pellets or agricultural byproducts
is recognized around the
world as a renewable source of
energy. It is considered “carbon
neutral” as burning does not
add to greenhouse gases in the
atmosphere. OPG’s biomass
program does not use food crops
and requires fuels to be from
sustainable sources. While there
is more work to be done test
results have been encouraging.
