Lennox Generating Station

Canada’s largest oil/gas-fuelled generating station,
Lennox GS is located on the north shore of Lake
Ontario in the Town of Greater Napanee in Eastern
Ontario. The last of the station’s four generators
came into service in 1977 with a total output of
2,100 megawatts of electricity. That’s enough
electricity to meet approximately 8 percent of the
electricity needs of the Province of Ontario. The plant
currently employs about 160 people. Their skills
and experience are essential for making Lennox GS
available to operate 24 hours a day, 365 days of
the year.
The oil used at Lennox GS is known as residual
oil - a by-product left after removing higher value
products like gasoline from the refining process.
Oil produces relatively low air emissions per unit of
electrical power produced, but to further improve
environmental performance and to add fuelling
flexibility, in 1997 Ontario Power Generation (OPG)
and Union Gas Limited invested over $40 million
to build a 17 kilometre pipeline and to convert the
station’s boilers to burn either oil or natural gas. This
flexibility helps OPG meet its air emission targets,
while allowing Lennox GS to reduce operating costs
by taking advantage of
spot market fuel prices.
Lennox GS mainly uses
natural gas in the spring,
summer and fall to ensure
that supplies are available
for home heating during
the winter months.
