The Power of Partnership -- Building a Healthy Community
Ontario Power Generation and MDS Nordion Contribute $350,000 to Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering Hospital

[AJAX]: Ontario Power Generation and MDS Nordion today announced a $350,000 contribution to the Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering Hospital Vital Links Campaign for redevelopment.

Through an incentive agreement based on excellent performance, MDS Nordion turned over $350,000 to OPG which then provided the funds to the Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering Hospital. The funds will go to the hospital's nuclear medicine facility.

The funds were created through a partnership between MDS Nordion, supplier of isotopes used to prevent, diagnose and treat disease around the globe, and Ontario Power Generation (OPG), which provides MDS Nordion with cobalt-60 harvested at Pickering Nuclear for use in creation of these products.

The funding is a natural extension of OPG's previously announced leadership commitment of $1,000,000, for the creation of the Ontario Power Generation Nuclear Medicine Suite.

"Ontario Power Generation has always been a strong community partner for this hospital and was instrumental in the creation of our Nuclear Medicine Clinic in 2002," said Gord Simmonds, chairman of the Vital Links Campaign. "We are grateful for their continued support as together we build a better healthcare system for residents in Ajax, Pickering and Whitby."

"OPG has a strong commitment to supporting the communities in which we operate and what better way to fulfill that commitment than through development of a nuclear medicine suite, capable of providing high-quality diagnostic care to our local communities," said Pierre Charlebois, Acting Chief Nuclear Officer, OPG. "We are very proud of our employees and their strong performance that made this contribution a reality. Our employees have demonstrated a strong commitment to providing for the energy needs of this province and, through the ‘Cobalt Harvesting' program, to enhancing quality of life in Durham Region and around the globe."

"The innovative contract with OPG resulted in a win for MDS Nordion, a win for OPG and a win for the hospital and the community it serves," said John Corley, Senior Vice-President Ion Technologies, MDS Nordion. "Our partnerships with key suppliers, such as OPG, enable MDS Nordion to offer quality of product and reliability of supply to our customers. We value our longstanding and successful relationship with OPG and are delighted with the results we have achieved together both for our customers and for the communities of Ajax, Pickering and Whitby."
