ONTARIO POWER GENERATION'S PICKERING A UNIT 1 RETURNS TO COMMERCIAL SERVICE
[Pickering]: Late yesterday Ontario Power Generation's Pickering ‘A' Unit 1 was reconnected to the grid. The unit is now increasing output and is expected to continue increasing power over the next few days. With its commissioning tests now complete, the unit is considered to be commercially in-service and its electrical output is being dispatched under the direction of the IESO.
"Returning Unit 1 to commercial service marks the successful conclusion of a complex management and construction challenge," said Pierre Charlebois, OPG's Chief Nuclear Officer. "Project staff is proud to have Unit 1 reconnected to the Ontario grid, helping to supply the electricity needs of Ontarians."
The refurbished Unit 1 first provided electricity to the province on September 26. Since that time it has periodically provided electricity as part of its commissioning process. Unit 1 is currently increasing its power output and it is expected to be operating at full power within the next couple of days. At full power the unit provides over 500 MW of electricity to the Ontario grid.
