CONSISTENT PERFORMANCE EARNS 10-YEAR LICENCE FOR OPG FACILITY
[Tiverton]; Ontario Power Generation (OPG) has received its first ever 10-year operating licence for its Western Waste Management Facility (WWMF) located just north of Tiverton, ON.
The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC), the regulatory body for Canada's nuclear industry, announced this decision May 22, 2007.
Keith Mombourquette, Vice President of Nuclear Waste Operation, was pleased with the CNSC decision and commented that the management systems at the WWMF, backed by quality assurance programs, ensure that quality isn't compromised with respect to safety, environment, health or operational performance.
"OPG is a performance driven company and this licence reflects the years of effort staff has put into operating the WWMF," Mombourquette said.
Bruce County Warden and Township of Huron-Kinloss Mayor Mitch Twolan, who spoke in favour of the 10-year licence at the CNSC public hearing held in Ottawa, was also supportive of OPG's approach to safe nuclear waste management.
"This decision from the CNSC reflects OPG's 40-year track record in the safe management of nuclear waste at the WWMF and OPG's commitment to ensuring that safety is always number one," Twolan said. "I believe the many submissions to the CNSC from the public in favour of the 10-year licence are also reflective of the community's confidence and trust in OPG's safety record."
Mayor Larry Kraemer of the Municipality of Kincardine, who also travelled to Ottawa to support the 10-year licence for the WWMF, was pleased with the CNSC decision.
"On behalf of the Council of the Municipality of Kincardine, we are pleased with the validation by the CNSC with respect to the new 10-year operating licence at the WWMF. This reinforces the confidence of Council in recognizing Ontario Power Generation as one of the key corporate citizens of our community," Kraemer said.
OPG recognizes and appreciates the community support its facilities have received and is committed to an approach of continuing transparency in maintaining these community relationships.
The WWMF has safely managed all of the low and intermediate level nuclear waste from the Bruce, Pickering and Darlington Generating Stations as well as the high level nuclear waste from the Bruce site for over 40 years. The Pickering and Darlington stations have their own respective facilities for managing high level nuclear waste.
