PICKETING BY THE SOCIETY OF ENERGY PROFESSIONALS AGAINST HYDRO ONE FORCES ONTARIO POWER GENERATION TO REDUCE OUTPUT AT ITS NANTICOKE GENERATING STATION

[Nanticoke]: Today, Ontario Power Generation took steps to reduce operations at its Nanticoke Generating Station. These measures became necessary given the labour dispute between the Society of Energy Professionals (the Society) and Hydro One.

"The Society set up secondary pickets today at our Nanticoke station that has prevented essential staff from reporting to work," said Ken Ball, Acting Station Manager. "The safe operation of a generating station requires appropriate staffing and we have been unable to get sufficient essential staff into the plant. Therefore, staff are shutting down two of the station's eight generators. We are also trying to keep a further two generators operating," said Ball. "Staff are working to keep the remaining four units operating at full capacity."

Each generating unit at Nanticoke provides 500 megawatts of electricity to the Ontario system, enough power to supply about 500,000 homes.

All other available OPG generating resources across the province are being fully utilized to support Ontario's electricity demands.
