ONTARIO POWER GENERATION CONTINUES FEDERAL APPROVAL PROCESS FOR NEW NUCLEAR AT DARLINGTON

[Pickering]: Ontario Power Generation has submitted to the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) a project description for potential new nuclear generating units on the same site as Darlington Nuclear, in Clarington, Ontario.

"The project description will be reviewed by the CNSC to help in the determination of the environmental assessment requirements," said Gregory Smith, Senior Vice-President Generation Development and Services. "It is flexible enough to ensure that we would be able to maintain Ontario Power Generation's installed nuclear generating capacity at current levels, whatever the outcome of future refurbishment decisions."

In June 2006, the Ontario Minister of Energy issued a directive asking OPG to begin the federal approvals process, including an environmental assessment for new nuclear units at an existing facility. Last fall OPG took the first step in a multi-faceted federal approvals process by applying to the CNSC for a site preparation licence. This project description is the second step in that process.

The Municipality of Clarington and the Region of Durham are very supportive of current nuclear operations and both welcome the potential of new build in their community.
