PROJECT OVERVIEW

OPG is moving forward with the federal approvals process for new nuclear units at an existing site.
OPG was directed by the Ontario Minister of Energy in June 2006 to begin the federal approvals process, including an environmental assessment, for new nuclear units at an existing site. OPG has begun this process, and has submitted an application for a Site Preparation Licence to the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) for a new nuclear power plant at the Darlington nuclear generating station site, in the Municipality of Clarington.
This is the first of a number of licences that are required in the federal approvals process. The CNSC must be satisfied that it is feasible to design, construct and operate the facility on the proposed site in a manner that will meet all health, safety, security and environmental protection requirements. A Site Preparation Licence, should it be granted, will not permit any construction activities.
OPG will be starting the studies required to demonstrate the suitability of the site for the new nuclear units. These studies include the current environmental conditions on and around the site. We will be seeking local input as we go forward.
