Name:
Lesley
Hometown:
Richmond Hill, Ontario
University/College & discipline:
Graduated from the University of Waterloo in 2004 as a History major. I then went back to school and completed a Human Resources Management certificate at Seneca College in 2005.
I chose history at Waterloo because I've always been fascinated with history (since it repeats itself!), and there are so many different eras, people, events and countries to study - you could never be bored.
My degree taught me excellent skills, including the ability to research, write well and think analytically. My time at Seneca gave me that practical experience I needed in order to begin a career in HR.
Position at OPG:
I am the Human Resources Assistant (Co-op Student) in the Talent Management Department located at OPG's Head Office in downtown Toronto.
Typical day & duties:
A great part about being in HR is that no day is ever the same! The majority of my duties involve the 100 or so co-op students and interns that work at OPG each term.
While their managers are responsible to ensure they gain a lot of practical work experience, I am here to ensure that they have an educational and enjoyable term. I've organized such events as Orientations, tours of different OPG plants (including Sir Adam Beck in Niagara Falls, and the Nuclear Control Room Simulator, and charity/social events like the CN Tower Climb.
I also assist OPG Managers in the process of hiring co-op students, as many managers continue to hire co-op students each and every term. This includes, creating job advertisements, posting them on our www.mypowercareer.com site, and narrowing down the list of applicants.
What made you choose this position at OPG?
I choose OPG because I knew that I would be able to gain some great HR experience to begin my career. As well, when I came for the interview, I was extremely impressed that everyone was so professional and friendly and I knew this would be a great place to work!
What's the best part about working at OPG?
My favorite part about my position here at OPG is the ongoing interaction with so many people on a daily basis - whether it be current OPG students, managers, university/college staff, and students looking for positions.
Plus, I have always loved event planning, and it is a ton of fun to organize the learning and social events for the students and seeing everyone come and enjoy themselves.
The OPG atmosphere:
It is a great place for students and all employees! Some of the student events have included a CN Tower Climb, Comedy Night and countless lunches & dinners.
Life / interests / hobbies outside work:
I am currently living in downtown Toronto and loving it! So life outside work includes taking in all that TO has to offer: the Leafs, seeing movies, going to the theatre, shopping and trying new restaurants.
Future career goals:
My future career goal is to continue in the Human Resources field, eventually obtain further education, specialize in one area of HR and explore a career in consulting.
