Name:
Pamela
Hometown:
I grew up on a beef farm outside of a small town called Providence Bay on Manitoulin Island, which is in Georgian Bay. (Fun Fact: Manitoulin Island is the largest fresh water island in the world!)
University/College & discipline:
I have completed three years of my Biochemical and Environmental Engineering degree at the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario.
I always enjoyed science and math in high school, so engineering seemed like an obvious fit for me. I chose the Biochemical and Environmental Engineering program because I really enjoy biology and chemistry and I feel like these are areas that are going to see a lot of growth and demand in the future.
Position at OPG:
I am currently completing a 15-month internship position with the Engineering Services Division in the Chemistry, Metallurgy and Welding Department, Process Chemistry and Effluents Section.
Typical day & duties:
My duties focus on support, monitoring, and performance reporting of the Water Treatment Plants at the Pickering and Darlington Nuclear Stations.
I also monitor the Radioactive Liquid Waste Management Systems at both Pickering and Darlington Nuclear Stations to ensure that any treated water being discharged into the lake meets our own chemical discharge limits and also meets the Municipal and Industrial Strategy for Abatement (MISA) toxicity testing requirements. In addition to these duties I also provide support to various projects within my department as they come up.
What made you choose this position at OPG?
I chose this position at OPG for several reasons:
1. To gain some practical engineering experience
2. To make some contacts in the industry
3. To learn
What's the best part about working at OPG?
The things I enjoy the most about working at OPG are the challenges and the opportunities. Everyday I get to learn something new; whether it be about the company, the industry, or my specific area of work.
The OPG atmosphere:
I have really enjoyed the people I have met while working at OPG. When I accepted my internship position I had to move to Pickering, which was a huge adjustment, but I have already made some great friendships and have had a ton of fun along the way.
Life / interests / hobbies outside work:
Outside of work I enjoy a variety of sports, curling in particular. I have even got a group of other students who had never curled before to join the OPG curling league with me, which has been a great experience. I also enjoy reading, going to the movies and spending time with my family and friends.
Future career goals:
I'm still making decisions about my future. I plan to graduate next year but haven't decided if I will join the working world at that time, or continue with my education. A career in the electricity industry is definitely an option and my experience at OPG will certainly influence where I decide to continue my career. |
