Name:
Ahmed

Hometown:
Richmond Hill, Ontario

University/College & discipline:
I am currently attending the University of Toronto where I am studying Electrical Engineering. I am enrolled in the Professional Experience Year program which is 12-16 month work term. I chose engineering because I enjoy a challenge and engineering projects always push you to the limits.

Position at OPG:
I am working as an emissions/running cost analyst in Energy Markets. I am located downtown.

Typical day & duties:
I have several day-to-day duties such as updating the Lennox Generating Station's Running Costs and sending the information to a distribution list. I also monitor the running costs for other fossil stations, indicating when we receive new plant parameters or coal prices. I have also done a significant amount of programming since arriving at OPG. I am currently working on a large project to fully automate the fossil stations running costs. The program pulls the inputs in automatically from e-mail attachments or network folders, does in-house calculations and sends the updates out automatically via e-mail and network connections.

What made you chose this position at OPG?
I chose this position at OPG because I felt that it was the best job on the table in terms of personal development. OPG allows you to learn about many different aspects of the electricity business, which are not exclusive to the electricity business. As a student, I have absorbed a lot of knowledge from different fields within energy markets (e.g. trading, fuels, emissions).

What's the best part about working at OPG?
I have really enjoyed the company of many of my fellow students and also that of my full-time mentors. I also enjoy the fact that I learn on the job and I'm challenged to learn new things.

The OPG atmosphere:
It's a great place for students to come. The social side is very developed with organized events coordinated by the social committee.

Life / interests / hobbies outside work:
My main hobby is playing basketball. I am currently part of two basketball teams, one at U of T and the other in a men's league. I am also an avid online gamer and a car enthusiast.

Future career goals:
My future is currently uncertain. I haven't decided whether I want to attend grad school or work as an engineer. Tough decisions!
