Name:
Ryan
Hometown:
North York, Ontario
University/College & discipline:
I am currently in my second year of Chemical Engineering at the University of Waterloo. After high school I was undecided as to what I wanted to specialize in, but I knew that I really enjoyed the sciences. This led me to explore disciplines that offered a diverse field of career opportunities. Chemical Engineering became my answer. The University of Waterloo offers great learning facilities as well as a top-notch co-op program to help me get a taste of different career options so I can choose which one is right for me.
Position at OPG:
I am a Co-op Student for Outage Operations here in the station at the Pickering location.
Typical day & duties:
Before every shift I get changed into radiological protection clothing and get ready for a fresh new day of work. There are many tasks to be completed during an outage and before coming into a shift, you never know which task may be assigned to you. Generally, I assist nuclear operators with their tasks. Preparing materials and equipment for a job, acting as a safety person for an operator doing work with known hazards and monitoring valves and gauges to ensure safe operation of the plant are some typical duties that I am assigned.
What made you choose this position at OPG?
OPG offers valuable experience working in a nuclear power plant that no other company in Ontario can match. They put a huge emphasis on safety and pay their employees fairly.
What's the best part about working at OPG?
One of the greatest pleasures working for OPG is meeting all the eccentric, interesting, funny and kind people who work here. Getting to know everyone and developing relationships is the key to making the workplace a fun and friendly environment.
The OPG atmosphere:
You meet a lot of new people who are also working at OPG and hear their stories while working for the company.
Life / interests / hobbies outside work:
I enjoy card-playing, eating out, watching movies and spending time with friends in general.
Future career goals:
Wherever I work in the future, I hope that I'm successful, challenged and satisfied. Also, I don't like being in one place in life, so I hope my future career gives me an opportunity to change what I do from time to time and allow for advancement in my career. |
