Name:
Andrew
Hometown:
Ajax, Ontario
University/College & discipline:
I'm a 4th Year Computer Science Student at Brock University, in St. Catharines, Ontario. I chose to enter the field of Computer Science because it was my favourite subject in high school, and also because of the many job opportunities.
Position at OPG:
Computer Based Training Instructional Designer, Nuclear Training Division - Pickering Learning Centre, Pickering, ON.
Typical day & duties:
Our team is responsible for the creation and maintenance of all of OPG's Computer Based Training courses. Another word for Computer Based Training is “eLearning”. This training is delivered company-wide over the web. It covers a wide range of topics from general safety and security to basic nuclear theory. As a student in this section, I am involved in building new courses, as well as keeping old courses up to date. I have the opportunity to attend meetings and help make key decisions that affect our projects.
What made you choose this position at OPG?
I was looking for a position where I could use my programming skills, design skills and relevant experience to build useful programs. This position is so much more than a support role. The programs that I work on are actually seen by thousands of people each year!
What's the best part about working at OPG?
OPG's casual work environment allows for a non-threatening transition into the office life. Everybody in our department looks at the students as equal team members. We are given real projects to work on with real deadlines, and we're always encouraged to ask questions and learn.
The OPG atmosphere:
OPG is a fun environment to work in. Social functions with other students are a great way to meet new people and to have some fun while you're at it!
Life / interests / hobbies outside work:
I play keyboards and sing in a rock band called Empty Chamber. I also enjoy extreme sports, like snowboarding, wakeboarding, aggressive in-line skating and rock climbing.
Future career goals:
After graduation, I'm hoping to get into the eLearning industry in some capacity and work my way up the ranks to a management position. My experience here at Ontario Power Generation has definitely helped point me in the right direction. |
