Safety starts with you
Safety is important. We take safety very seriously at OPG. Ontario Power Generation expects every worker, young and not-so-young, to return home at the end of every day in the same physical condition as they started it in.

Safety is job #1

Safety is important to all of our workers, our customers and the communities where we work. Safety should also be important to you. Everyone is responsible for safety. Even if you have a part time job, you should be aware of safety in your work place.

Young people entering the workforce should take part in Passport to Safety. This program aims to give young workers a basic understanding of what they need to know to protect themselves from injuries and danger on the job. Any job.

Because safety is important to us, and we ensure everyone follows the correct procedures, our safety record has improved continuously over the past five years. OPG wins Industry awards for its safe practices.

Electrical safety
Electricity is dangerous! It can kill, so it is always important to be safe around electricity. Here are some excellent websites that will help you stay safe:

Elecsafe, a not-for-profit organization, is a good source of information on electricity safety at home and on the job.

Electrical Safety Foundation International is another organization whose website provides comprehensive and useful information on electrical safety.

Dam safety
Hydroelectric dams and stations can be dangerous places because:

  • Water is moving fast around them

  • Turbulence and strong undercurrents can quickly overwhelm even a strong swimmer

  • Water levels can change very quickly

  • Spots that look calm can become dangerous within minutes

Swimmers, canoeists, kayaks - everybody - should be careful anywhere around dams. Ontario Power Generation has a water safety brochure you should read: Stay Clear, Stay Safe.
